In 46 B.C., Julius Caesar implemented the Julian calendar to replace the older Roman calendar with a more consistent and organized system. It established a 365-day year, with a leap day added every four years—bringing the total to 366 days during leap years. This calendar remained widely used for centuries before being replaced in much of the world by the Gregorian calendar in 1582.

Although it’s no longer the primary civil calendar, the Julian system is still used in certain religious traditions and in scientific contexts.

Understanding Julian Dates and JDN

The Julian Day Number (JDN) is a continuous count of days used mainly by astronomers and researchers. The numbering system officially started at noon on January 1, 4713 BCE, based on the proleptic version of the Julian calendar. Because it runs in an uninterrupted sequence, it allows scientists to measure long spans of time without confusion. Days are calculated from noon to noon rather than midnight to midnight.

In everyday and industrial settings, “Julian date” often refers to a numeric format representing the day of the year:

  • 5-digit format (YYDDD)
    • First two digits = year
    • Last three digits = day of the year
    • Example: 26365 = December 31, 2026
  • 7-digit format (YYYYDDD)
    • First four digits = full year
    • Last three digits = day of the year
    • Example: 2026365 = December 31, 2026

Day numbers begin at 001 and end at 365 in a standard year (or 366 in a leap year).

Browse the designs below and choose the format that works best for you. Each calendar is free to download as a high-quality PNG file and easy to print at home or the office.
